Uses of plants
Plants are very useful to us. Some plants give us food. Some plants give us other useful things.
Plants give us food
We eat vegetables, fruits, cereals, and pulses from plants.
Vegetables
We eat different parts of plants as vegetables.
Root
We eat roots of some plants like carrot, radish, beetroot, and sweet potato as vegetables.
Stem
We eat stems of some plants like potato, onion, ginger, and arbi as vegetables.
Leaves
We eat leaves of some plants like spinach, cabbage, and lettuce as vegetables.
Fruits
We eat fruits of some plants like tomato, brinjal, lady’s finger, gourd and pumpkin as vegetables.
Flowers
We eat flowers of some plants like cauliflower and broccoli as vegetables.
Fruits
We eat ripe fruits of some plants like apple, mango, banana, pineapple, watermelon, orange and grapes. They are sweet and juicy.
Cereals and pulses
We eat the seeds of some plants.
Wheat, rice, millet (bajra), and corn (maize) are called cereals.
Arhar, lentil, moong, and gram are called pulses. Pulses are commonly known as ‘dal’.
Cereals and pulses are also called ‘foodgrains’.
Plants give us useful things.
We get many useful things from plants. Some of them are given below:
Wood
We get wood from trees like shisham, sal, walnut, pine, and teak. Wood is used to make beds, chairs, tables, doors, windows, boats, etc. Wood is also used as fuel for cooking food.
Medicines
Plants like neem, tulsi, mint, eucalyptus, and amla give us medicines. These plants are called medicinal plants.
Perfumes, soaps, and toothpaste
We get perfumes from the flowers like jasmine, rose, and lily. We get soaps and toothpaste from oils and juices of plants like neem, coconut, and cloves.
Oil
We get oil from the seeds of plants like mustard, sunflower, and coconut. Oil from these plants is used for cooking food. Oil from mustard and coconut is also used for oiling the hair.
Fibres
We get fibers like cotton and jute from plants. Cotton fibers are used to make cotton clothes. Jute fibers are used to make bags, mats, ropes, and sacks.
Rubber, gum, and paper
We get rubber from the latex of the rubber tree. This rubber is used in making tyres, tubes, and erasers.
We get gum from the acacia (babool) tree. This gum is used to make glue. We use glue to stick pictures and many other things.
We get paper from the plants like bamboo and pine.
Tea, coffee, cocoa, and sugar
We get tea from the leaves of the tea plant.
We get coffee from the seeds of the coffee plant.
We get cocoa from the seeds of the cocoa plant.
We get sugar from the juice of the sugarcane stem.
Spices
We get spices like cardamom, black pepper, and cinnamon from plants. Spices add flavor to our food.
Other uses of plants
Plants are homes to many animals, birds, and insects. Plants keep the air fresh and clean. They also make the world beautiful. We use flowers and leaves of some plants to make bouquets and decorate our houses. We also use flowers to make garlands and worship God.
